2001 APSA Annual Meeting

Mr. Yoo Taehyun To Host Annual Dinner

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Yoo Taehyun, South Korea’s Consul General in San Franciso, has graciously agreed to host the dinner for APSA/AKPSNA panel participants on August 31 during the San Francisco APSA Annual Meeting.  More details will follow as they become available.

The American Asian Review (AAR), a refereed quarterly on contemporary Asian affairs, is currently under the editorship of T.J. Professor Chung-in Moon was appointed Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University in August 2000.  He was also elected Vice President of the International Studies Association at the 42nd Annual Convention of ISA in Chicago on Feb. 20, 2001.

Dr. George Totten reports the following: Professor Emeritus George Totten, chair of the University of Southern California’s Korea Project, recently hosted Prof. Tuk Chu Chun of Soongsil University for a six-month visit at guest of the Korea Project.  His research in Los Angeles compared the political consciousness of Korean Americans here with a similar cohort in Seoul.  During his stay, Dr. Chun gave a public presentation on his findings and wrote an impressive article explaining his findings.

Dr. Totten was invited by the Nobel Peace Price Institute to attend the presentation of the Prize to President Kim Dae Jung on December 10, 2000, in Oslo.  Dr. Totten also attended the speech President Kim gave in the Swedish Parliament two days later.  Dr. Totten had served as the Director of the Center for Pacific Asia Studies at the University of Stockhom from 1985-1989 and had nominated President Kim for the prize.

Dr. Kyung Moon Hwan, a Harvard PhD and a member of the USC History Department, is the Vice Chair of the Korea Project.  Its advisors are Dr. Sunhyuk Kim, a Stanford PhD and a member of the USC Political Science Department, and Dr. Man Cha, a USC PhD, or Fresno State University.

 

Professor C.S. Eliot Kang at the Political Science Department, Northern Illinois University, has been promoted to associate professor with tenure.
