MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am honored to serve as President of the Association of Korean Political Studies (AKPS) for the next two years.  During my tenure, I will continue to carry on the initiatives started by previous presidents and begin some new ones to improve our organization.

In the past few years, membership in AKPS has declined.  To deal with the issue, we intend to employ several measures to increase the number of members in the organization.  First, I am going to continue the campaign to increase our membership.  To this end, we have researched potential members based on their research interests and are going to aggressively solicit them to join our organization.  I ask you to join our campaign by asking potential members to join AKPS.  If you know anyone who might be interested, please forward their name and email address to our executive secretary.

Second, to expand the activities and improve the visibility of AKPS, we have become a cooperating member of the International Studies Association (ISA).  One of the benefits for becoming a cooperating organization of ISA is that we receive a quota of panels at the annual meetings of ISA.  This will provide us with another opportunity, in addition to APSA, to share our research on Korean politics.  My hope is that in the future we will begin this kind of relationship with the Association of Asian Studies.  With the papers presented at these conferences, we may try to produce an edited volume or a special issue in a journal.

Third, we have hired a technician to maintain our webpage (www.akps.org).  I expect that it will be maintained with regular updates with new space created to post information, data, and discussions.  Also, a series of working papers will be posted to the webpage.  The professional maintenance of our webpage will be a good source of information and a valuable tool for our members.

To do all the things I described above, we need financial support.  To raise funds, we have requested financial support from the Korea Foundation and the POSCO foundation.  We will continue this effort as we find other possible sources.  Since we are dependent on dues, it is also important for current members to contribute their dues on an annual basis.

Finally, I would like to announce our new office holders.  Esook Yoon (Kent State University) has been elected Vice-President. Terence Roehrig (Cardinal Stritch University) and Jungmin Seo (University of Hawaii-Manoa) have agreed to serve as the Executive Secretary and Program Chair for the 2006 APSA Meetings respectively.  We will work very hard to continue improving the organization and welcome any suggestions or feedback.

We look forward to working with you to push this organization to the next level.

Uk Heo

President of AKPS
