AKPS/ISA Panel:

The 52nd Annual Convention of International Studies Association (ISA) will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, March 16-19, 2011. The Association of Korean Political Studies (AKPS) is seeking paper proposals and volunteers to serve as panel chairs and paper discussants. Co-authored papers are also welcome. Papers on any aspect of Korea’s foreign relations and domestic politics are acceptable. Paper proposals should include paper title, abstract (less than 500 words), name of author, address, phone & fax number, email address, and institutional affiliation. 2010 DMZ Peace Congress in Korea: “Green Cooperation for Peace and Life”

 The 2010 DMZ Peace Congress by the Korean Association of International Studies will be held in Seoul, South Korea, from 12 to 14 August. The main theme for the Congress is “Green Cooperation for Peace and Life.” The Congress will provide a forum to discuss a wide range of subjects concerning the only heavily armed Demilitarized Zone on Earth in the Korean peninsula and its related topics such as:

- Peace in the era of globalization
- Searching for peace in the Korean peninsula
- Peace management in border regions and DMZ
- Communication and peace in the Korean peninsula
- UN and world peace including Peace-Keeping Operations
- Environmental issues and regional cooperation

The hosting organization, the Korean Association of International Studies, is one of the most prestigious academic associations in South Korea mainly studying international relations and related scholarly subjects.

We welcome submission of papers for the aforementioned areas and other related fields.

* Please submit paper proposal to the Program Director at 2010dmz@gmail.com .

-Proposal should include following information: Name, Paper Title, Paper Abstract (up to 300 words), Institution, Position, Email Address, Mailing Address, Telephone Number
-Proposal Deadline: April 30, 2010
-Invited presenters will be notified by May 15, 2010
-Due for papers is July 15, 2010.

* Accommodation & Meals: to be borne by the KAIS

-The KAIS will cover three to four nights (August 11~13 or 14, if joining the below DMZ tour) of accommodation and meals.

* Transportation including air & incidentals: to be borne by participants

-Partial financial assistance for airfare to scholars from developing countries may be given upon request and on the competitive basis.

* DMZ tour will be arranged after the conference (August 14, 2010).

The Kim Myong Whai Award:

The Institute of Korean Studies announces the creation of the The Kim Myong Whai Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the enhancement and internationalization of Korean Studies. Dr. Kim Myong Whai was a long time faculty member at Yonsei University and former Korean International Political Science Association President (1962~64) and Honorary President (1998~2009). He founded the Institute of Korean Studies in 1968 and served as the publisher of Korea Observer until he passed away on November 19th, 2009.

The prize will be awarded annually up to two individuals for outstanding papers published in Korea Observer, thus encouraging and rewarding contributions of the highest quality. The first Kim Myong Whai Award will be presented on January 15th, 2011. Each recipient of the award receives a certificate and a prize of USD 2,500.

Korea Observer:

Korea Observer is a quarterly academic journal published by the Institute of Korean Studies. Those wishing to contribute may submit an original work on Korea in the fields of the Social Sciences and Humanities. Manuscripts submitted should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts accepted for review are evaluated anonymously by a minimum of two scholars (see the attached file for detailed submission guidelines).

 

North Korean Review:

North Korean Review, a peer-reviewed journal published twice annually by McFarland & Company, welcomes policy-oriented manuscripts of up to 7000 words and short papers, commentaries, and case studies of up to 3000 words on North Korean internal and external affairs. In addition, NKR will publish short summaries of all books received and complete reviews of selected books that address subjects related to North Korea.
