The Member Institutions are the East Asia Institute in Seoul, Fudan University in Shanghai, Keio University in Tokyo, Peking University in Beijing, and Taiwan National University in Taipei.

Eligibility: The EAI Fellows Program is intended for tenured, tenure-track, and untenured East Asianist professors based in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and other non-Asian regions, conducting research in the fields of political science, international relations, and sociology.

Selection Process: The representatives of the Member Institutions plus an Advisor based in the United States select EAI Fellows through an annual competition.

Support: The program provides a total of USD10,000 for each of the Fellows for a three-week visit. The grant covers an honorarium for the article, seminar, and lecture as well as the cost of ground transportation, round-trip economy-class international air flight, hotel accommodation, meals, and a per diem for a total of three-week stay in East Asia [see comments on Application Forms].

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We write to ask your assistance in publicizing a fellowship opportunity at the East Asia Institute (EAI), an independent non-profit research and educational institution in Seoul, Korea. The "Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia" was established in 2005 by EAI, as an international exchange program for scholars with expertise in peace, governance, and development in East Asia. Funded by the Henry Luce Foundation of New York, the East Asia Foundation of Seoul, and the Chang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taipei, it invites established and next-generation East Asianists of the United States to give seminars and lectures based on unpublished articles submitted exclusively for the Fellows Program during their visit of three weeks to two or more institutions of higher education in East Asia. The EAI Fellows hold seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article submitted solely for the purpose of the Fellows Program, at the Programs' Member Institutions: the East Asia Institute in Seoul, Fudan University in Shanghai, Keio University in Tokyo, Peking University in Beijing, and Taiwan National University in Taipei. We plan to select five Fellows in 2008. Each of the Fellows receives a stipend of USD10,000 for the cost of travel and accommodation in East Asia for three weeks.

We need your assistance to ensure the EAI Fellows Program becomes widely known to United States-based East Asianists. Post-Doctoral and Visiting Scholar Fellowships
on the Political Economy of Korea
Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies
University of California, San Diego

With generous support from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), the Korea-Pacific Program (KPP) at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS), University of California, San Diego is pleased to announce two new fellowship opportunities:

The fellowships are designed to support research on the political economy of Korea in the postwar period. A crucial requirement of a successful application is evidence of a book project that can be brought toward successful completion during the fellowship period and is likely to result in publication at a university or equivalent press.
The fellowships are open to scholars of all nationalities, and in all of the social sciences including political science, economics, sociology, and anthropology as well as history. The fellowships are open with respect to topic as well; the committee will place primary emphasis on fresh theoretical and empirical contributions. Possible areas of interest include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

The committee is open to comparative work, but will look for evidence of an original contribution with respect to the political economy of Korea.

The AKS-KPP Visiting Scholar Program

The AKS-KPP Visiting Scholar program provides support up to $75,000 for tenured faculty completing book manuscripts on the political economy of Korea. Visiting scholars must spend between 3 months (one academic quarter) and one year in residence. The level of support is dependent on the time in residence and the candidate’s other sources of funding—for example, from sabbatical—as well as research needs. The fellowship is designed primarily to cover travel and living expenses on the assumption that most of the research from the project has been completed. But the committee will entertain proposals for certain research expenses, including additional travel and hiring of a research assistant.
All visiting scholars will be expected to present their work at some point during their stay. If the proposed manuscript is adequately advanced, the KPP will organize a workshop built around the visiting scholar’s work. The KPP will support travel for the workshop if it is held after the fellowship period.

Application Process

There is no application form. Applicants will provide the following materials to the committee:

The AKS-KPP Post-Doctoral Fellowship provides support up to $50,000 for junior scholars who will complete their PhD degree before July 1 2008 or who currently hold untenured positions. The fellowship is particularly suited for junior scholars turning dissertations into manuscripts, although the committee will support second projects that are sufficiently advanced that they can be completed within the fellowship period.
Post-doctoral fellows would typically spend nine months (three quarters) or one year in residence. The level of support is dependent on the time in residence and existing funding, for example, from sabbatical. The fellowship is designed primarily to cover travel and living expenses on the assumption that most of the research from the project has been completed. But the committee will entertain proposals for certain research expenses, including additional travel.
Post-doctoral fellows will be expected to present their work at some point during their stay. If the proposed manuscript is adequately advanced, the KPP will organize a workshop built around the fellow’s work. The KPP will support travel for the workshop if it is held after the fellowship period.
